Dental crowns and bridges

Dental crowns and bridges

Published: 2006-08-02 – Updated: 2008-04-24

Healthy teeth are not only a cosmetic desire, but one for your whole body's well-being too. If your teeth are damaged and unsightly, you may want to consider having ceramic crowns or bridges for a new and natural look.

What are ceramic crowns and bridges?

Ceramic crowns can replace damaged teeth that still have their root. Ceramic bridges, on the other hand, serve as a substitution for totally missing teeth. The biggest advantage of crowns and bridges is that they are almost indistinguishable from your natural teeth. They have very similar physical attributes as natural teeth (they expand in the heat and contract in the cold) and naturally transmit light. Ceramic material is also hypoallergenic and, compared to crowns with a metal core, they do not oxidize or emit any substances. Modern technology now being used ensures the ceramic material is strong.

Why ceramic dental work Prague?

Prague has many attractive features for those considering ceramic crowns or bridges abroad. Its location in Central Europe is easy to access; its mild climate is conducive to healing and its experienced clinics and dental crown and bridge dentists ensure you'll receive the best possible care. Ceramic dental surgery Prague costs are often much more affordable than in the UK or with the NHS. Are you a good candidate for ceramic crowns and bridges?

If you are dissatisfied with the look of your teeth because they are damaged or some are missing, ceramic dental work may be right for you. It is necessary to have an understanding of the colour tone of the crown or bridge. If you want a crown, it is necessary to have a tooth with a preserved root to which the crown can be attached. Ceramic bridges need at least two preserved teeth or dental roots to be attached. You can discuss the procedure with others who have had dental crowns or bridges in our forum.

Before the treatment

During the consultation, the doctor will evaluate the condition of your teeth and discuss with you your expectations for the surgery. It is necessary for him/her to precisely understand your ideas about the colour tone of the crowns. It is possible to choose the colour of your new teeth from a wide range of options, so that it will be as close a match as possible to the colour of your natural teeth. If your teeth are very damaged even at the roots, it may be necessary to use other treatments, for example having a dental implant.

Anesthesia

Readying your teeth (grinding) for the application of the crown or bridge is performed under local anesthesia. If you have ever experienced an allergic reaction to medications or anesthetics, especially Mezocain, Lidocain etc. it is extremely important to tell your doctor. The actual fixation of the crowns or bridges is painless.

The dental work procedure

First, the doctor grinds the tooth to a desirable, often conical shape. This is followed by a vital dental treatment - root canals that can sometimes last several hours. If the tooth is not precisely prepared, it can begin to ache after some time. Then, the whole procedure, including the crown work, will have to be repeated. After the root canals, the dentist will make a mechanical impression of the ground tooth, the adjacent teeth and the opposing teeth in the opposing arch. A crown or bridge is made in a dental laboratory according to this impression. In the time between the grinding of your natural teeth and the application of a crown or bridge, you will receive a temporary denture that will allow you to consume food normally and maintain social interaction. The final crown or bridge is fixed to the tooth with a zinc-phosphate cementum or with disilicate resin. If the tooth is weak or stressed, it is possible to strengthen it with a metal base, although it will effect the look.

Present technology (CEREC restorative technique) offers the whole procedure in one visit – creating an electronic impression of the teeth, modelling the veneers on the computer and the creation of the final work and adhesion.

After the treatment

The dentist or dental hygienist will instruct you on how to care for ceramic crowns. The most important factor is diligent dental hygiene.

How long will ceramic crowns and ceramic bridges last?

In most cases, the durability of ceramic crowns and bridges is quite long. It is however limited by the life span of the teeth roots to which the crown or bridge is attached. The patient's care of the ceramic crown or bridge, as well as their caution while eating also effects the length of time the dental work will be effective.

Crown and bridge

I have a completely healthy set of teeth with one bridge in the fron of my upper jaw. However I had an operation about 8 years ago, due to precedural requirement for my treatment, my teeth were cut short at the time. I feel as though they do not look natural, and would like to have them crowned permenantly. They are 8 teeth including one bridge. I don't know what is the most looked natural and the longest lasting crown. Would you please do write to me abou the most natural and longest lasting ceramic crown, including the cost for each tooth. I am planning to have them done in the near future, so I would be grateful for any information relevant to my quiries. Looking forward to hearing from.
