Prof. Pavel Kuchynka, M.D.,PhD.

Prof. Kuchynka started working at the Eye Clinic of the Teaching Hospital Královské Vinohrady (THKV) after graduating from the Medical School of Charles University in 1974. After he was awarded 2nd degree specialist accreditation in 1981 he worked as chief surgeon of the Eye Clinic of the THKV. In 1984 he was awarded the title of candidate of science (CSc) for his thesis on histopathology of the anterior eye segment. Since 1991 he has been head of the Eye Clinic of THKV, in 1994 he was appointed a professor of eye medicine.

In his surgical practice Prof. Pavel Kuchynka, M.D.,PhD. focuses mainly on the anterior eye segment. He specialises in cataract and refractive surgery. He was the initiator of the establishment of the Centre of Refractive Surgery (ELAS) at the Eye Clinic of THKV in 1995 that used the latest treatment methods (LASIK, facic intraocular lenses) from the very beginning. Prof. Pavel Kuchynka, M.D.,PhD. is also known as the pioneer of the modern technology of ultrasonic lens facoemulsification in the Czech Republic.

Prof. Kuchynka is one of the founders of the Czech Association of Refractive and Cataract Surgery, at present he is the chairman of the body. He is also a member of the Czech Ophthalmological Society, where he acted as the committee chairman for several years.

Prof. Kuchynka - as the only internationally recognized specialist in the Czech Republic - was elected a committee member of two leading ophthalmological societies (American Academy of Ophthalmology and European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery). He was also elected a committee member of a number of other international ophthalmological organisations (Council of European Society of Ophthalmology, International Society of Refractive Surgery, Medical Advisory Board of International Federation of Eye Banks). He is also a member of the following organisations: Council of European Association of Tissue Banks, European Community University Professors of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Since 1996 Prof. Pavel Kuchynka, M.D.,PhD. Has been a lecturer in-service training courses for American eye doctors.
