Prim. Vladimir Smazinka, M.D.

After graduating from the Palacký University Medical Faculty in Olomouc in 1980 he began working at the eye department in Zlín. Under the guidance of asc. prof. K. Kuběna, M.D., PhD. he came to specialise in eye microsurgery and the introduction of new surgical procedures.

He became engaged in research into uveitis and introduced the treatment of this condition by Dioprophos injections, observed the effect of IR radiation on the incidence of cataract and contributed to the development of the first intraocular lens in the country.

In cooperation with Prof. I. Karel, M.D., DrSc. he introduced PPV in one of the first operations of the posterior eye segment in 1984.

He published the results in the magazine Czech and Slovak Ophthalmology and presented them at professional congresses.

After gaining his second medical certificate he began working as head physician at the eye department in the hospital in Uherske Hradiste in 1989 where he established a workplace equipped with the latest technology.

To date he has performed more than 12,000 cataract operations and several hundred cornea transplants.

He taught externally at the medical school gaining a certificate in 1992.

Prim. Vladimir Smazinka, M.D. is a member of the Czech Medical Chamber, gaining a licence to work as a consultant in the field in 1997, Czech Medical Association of J.E. Purkyně, Czech Society of Ophthalmology, Czech Society of Refractive and Cataract Surgery (ČSRKCH), European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS).
