Is this bad for my bones/shins?

Hello,
I'm not sure if it is appropriate to post this question here but I really need some guidance and would appreciate any advice you could provide. I want to make my shins stronger for martial arts. Shin conditioning basically involves deadening the nerves in the shins to reduce pain when sparring/fighting. From my understanding this happens by increasing bone density and calcium deposits in the shins in a process Orthopedic surgeons call Wolfe's Law.
I have heard that using a rolling pin up and down your shins is an effective method. But when you hit your shins with anything that's harder than the bone you run the risk of causing tiny stress fractures and developing arthritis later on in life.
I would specifically like to know if I roll a large wax candle (softer than my shins) over my shins do I run the same risks? Again, any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Jim
Procedure
Conservative Treatment of InjuriesNot every fracture needs to be operated. Most of the uncomplicated closed fractures may be treated by plaster cast fixation after X-ray diagnosis. Synthetic bandage fixation and common elastic bandages may be used for sprains, contusions or injuries in soft parts of a joint. Orthosis is a modern solution for post-traumatic conditions.
